How to prepare your home for a vacation

At Horizon Alarms, we like to take time every week to answer questions commonly asked by consumers interested in purchasing an alarm system. This week, we’ll be focusing on how to make sure that your home is secure while you’re away on vacation.

Going on vacation is a luxury for most families, so why use the time that you should be relaxing spent on worrying about what’s going on back home? To create peace of mind, travelers must properly secure their homes before heading out. We’ve outlined a few tips for homeowners to ensure their property and possessions are safeguarded while away.

  • Secure Your Entrances Intruders most commonly enter homes through first-floor windows and doors. Take proper precautions to confirm all vulnerable entry points are secured before taking off. This goes beyond locks — alarms and sensors in place will do a much better job of putting you at ease.
  • Set Up Mobile Alerts Stay connected to your home and create peace of mind while on vacation with mobile monitoring. Download your security provider’s mobile application to keep tabs on your home at all times and control your smart home devices on a single interface. Periodically check real-time footage from any web-enabled device remotely and set-up mobile alerts to receive immediate notifications if an intruder tampers with a door or window. Use the mobile app to visually verify what has triggered an alarm or image sensor.
  • Schedule Lighting A dark home may indicate to intruders that you are gone, so schedule lights to turn on when an alarm or sensor has been triggered or at regularly occurring intervals to give the illusion you are home. You can also install floodlights to illuminate your home’s exterior when movement is detected.
  • Take Precautions Burglars may be more likely to target a home that appears to be empty. Take additional safety measures to make it appear as though you never left. A few examples of this include pausing mail and newspaper delivery or asking a neighbor to pick it up for you. Also, use social media cautiously, and avoid revealing your specific whereabouts online.

Like we mentioned at the jump, an alarm system can work wonders for your piece of mind when you’re away from home. If you need assistance in purchasing, installing, inspecting, or perfecting the security needs for your home or office, call the Horizon Alarms team at 800-467-1832 or send us a message and we’ll reach out to discuss all of your alarm needs.
